Nearly two decades ago, after returning from my first-ever keynote speech in Australia, I wanted to bring something back home—a small token to remember the experience. At the airport gift shop, I picked up a few leather kangaroo scrotum pouches (yes, those), and a set of seven socks, each labeled with a day of the week. It was years before the fun or “crazy sock” trend took off in the U.S. I wasn’t starting a collection, just bringing home something unique.
What I didn’t realize was that, as a father of young kids, that simple choice would spark something bigger. My kids thought Dad likes fun socks. And before long, socks became the go-to gift: birthdays, Father’s Days, Christmases—and with six kids, that adds up quickly. Before I knew it, I had hundreds of pairs. And somewhere along the way, those socks started to mean something more.

At first, I wore them just for fun. But then I started mismatching them—intentionally—as a way to stay mentally sharp, emotionally engaged, and to connect each day to a personal affirmation or focus. If I had a keynote on creativity or culture, I’d pick socks that represented that message. If I wanted to remind myself to be patient or grateful, I’d wear something that helped me step into that greater intention.
Eventually, people noticed. “Hey Kirk, your socks don’t match. Is that on purpose?” And yes—it was. That question became a conversation, and the conversation became a metaphor: we should all live life on purpose. Be intentional about our thoughts, our actions, our outcomes. My socks became daily reminders—positive triggers that called me back to my focus and my values. And they started sparking conversations with others about what they were focused on too.

In leadership coaching groups, I even began using socks as a tool for growth. Each person would pick socks that symbolized what they wanted to strengthen as a leader. It was fun, but it was also meaningful—a physical, visible cue to their intention.
Then around 2017 or 2018, I had the idea: What if I started my own sock brand? I even knew the name immediately—Walkie-Talkie Socks™. “Walk your talk.” It tied beautifully into both my military background as an Army Ranger and my lifelong belief that actions speak louder than words. But then, like so many of us do, I talked myself out of it. “I don’t know anything about making socks,” I told myself. And hiding behind excuses like, “I’ve already got enough on my plate.”
Still, the idea wouldn’t let go. For years, it showed up again and again in my journals—in lists of things I felt called to do but hadn’t yet found the courage or clarity to start. Maybe you’ve got something like that too—a dream, a business, a story, a song—something you keep kicking down the road because life keeps filling up the space.
But in 2024, I decided enough was enough. I wrote down five big, hairy audacious goals that had been following me for years: finish two books, start another, revamp my website, launch The Initiative Institute—and finally create my own sock brand. I gave it to God and the universe, and within weeks, the right people started showing up. Designers, creators, and friends who believed in the idea and could bring it to life. The team at Think Tank Creative and Spark Labs helped me turn those napkin sketches into real designs.
Now, here we are in 2025. After testing four different manufacturers, our first ten designs are being knitted right now. Walkie-Talkie Socks™ has officially launched. I still remember the thrill of holding that first prototype pair, feeling the weave of the fabric and realizing that an idea I’d kicked around for years was finally tangible this October. By early next year, we’ll have around 40 designs available at walkietalkiesocks.com.
But here’s the truth: Walkie-Talkie Socks™ isn’t really about socks. It’s about stepping more intentionally into your passion and your purpose. Our mission is simple—much like The Initiative Institute, it’s about helping people act on intention and purpose, transforming good ideas into bold steps forward, to help people walk their talk, to live more intentionally, and to find fun, creative ways to stay connected to their focus and their faith in what’s possible.
If you’ve ever had a dream you’ve delayed, an idea you’ve doubted, or a goal you’ve kept waiting. I get it. This brand is my way of finally saying yes to something I’ve felt called to do for years. My hope is that in joining this journey—by supporting, wearing, or sharing Walkie-Talkie Socks™—you’ll find momentum for your own dreams too.
We’ll have themed collections—the Affirmation Series, an Action Series, and socks inspired by my keynotes and work around safety, culture, initiative, and creativity. We already have over 40 concept designs ready, and we’ll keep growing from there.
But most importantly, we invite you to walk with us. Share your ideas, your affirmations, your stories. Show us what you’re stepping into. Tag us on social media, connect with our community, and let your story inspire ours.
Together, let’s step with greater passion and purpose.
Every step can be a statement of purpose.
When we walk our talk, we invite others to move forward too. One day, one dream, one step, and one sock at a time. Welcome to the Walkie-Talkie Tribe.
